Developed by Emmis, the NextRadio app allows mobile consumers to listen to live, local FM radio on FM-enabled smartphones. Users also receive supporting information like album art, program information and metadata over the internet. Backed by radio industry leaders, and with support from the National Association of Broadcasters, NextRadio is noted for giving consumers access to alerts and critical information during emergencies, even when WiFi and cell service is down. Service is limited to streaming, however, on iOS devices, as Apple products are not FM-enabled.
