NAB collaborated with Intel to bring a demonstration of glass-to-glass 8K content originating from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris to the PILOT Innovation Lab at NAB’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. This was one of only two locations in the U.S. where this feed was available to be viewed. The content was captured using 8K cameras located at selected Olympic venues.

2024 Olympics in 8k

The 8K video format was 7680 x 4320, 10 bit HDR at 60 frames per second resulting in a raw bit rate of approximately 48 Gb/s. In Paris, Intel compressed the live raw feeds using Versatile Video Coding (VVC) by about 1000:1 to achieve a 20 -60 Mb/s livestream that was delivered over the public internet. In NAB’s lab, the compressed live stream was received and decoded using an Intel® CoreTM i9 processor PC and displayed on a retail 8K TV set.
