TV Repack and Next Gen Transition Preparation

  • Changes and Impact of ANSI/TIA-222-H on Existing and New Broadcast Infrastructure - $15

    Date: April 26, 2020
    Topics: ,

ANSI/TIA-222-H is the latest revision of the 222 design standard from TIA, effective January 1, 2018. In a little less than 2 years, the updated standard has had a profound impact on structural design, evaluation and maintenance of tower infrastructure. These changes include more efficient evaluation of wind, ice and earthquake loads, greater clarity around mounts and antennas designs and focus on existing infrastructure, specifically with respect to inspection, anchor evaluation and construction expectations. This paper / presentation will highlight these changes, compare to earlier revisions and discuss implementation / adoption nationwide.

  • Repacking ATSC 1.0 Programs on a Full Power, Two CDs, and Translators with New Encoders - $15

    Date: April 26, 2020
    Topics: ,

As of 2019, WHSV-TV and WSVF-CD had maxed out its ATSC 1.0 Harris Selenio encoder system, transmitting ABC in HD, CBS in SD, ION in SD, and time-sharing Me/TV and MY/TV in SD on WHSV-TV, and transmitting FOX in HD and CBS in HD on WSVF-CD.?

The purchase by Gray Television, our owners, of the NBC affiliate in an adjacent DMA, meant that our program carriage requirements for 2020 could include an NBC HD program stream, a CW HD program stream, and the potential addition of DABL and HWY 65 diginets.? WHSV-TV is also obtaining the use of a translator being converted to a LPTV station, that is co-located with WSVF-CD.

This presentation will walk the attendee through the design process, the next generation virtual encoder system testing and selection process, and the final decisions made on how to repack the ATSC 1.0 programming on our set of transmitters and translators, in our unique single-full-power station DMA.

  • Using TV Transmission System Commissioning Reports - $15

    Date: April 26, 2020
    Topics: ,

As US TV channels are repacked, impacted stations receive commissioning documentation for their transmission systems from manufacturers, contractors, and consultants. Too often, these reports are received, filed away, and not seen again until there?s a problem. And their creators often compartmentalize subsystems to the products they deliver or commission, not looking at the transmission system as a whole. This presentation will review the documentation typically received, describe the measurements most pertinent to ongoing station operation, and discuss the use of these baseline reports and data in maintenance and troubleshooting of transmission systems.
