The NRCS PI Codes Database maintains a list of active FM radio licenses and their assigned RDS PI codes. It is a file-based resource, intended to be transferred by end-users into local database storage. There is an existing process to authorize end-user access the database file through use of an API Authorization token, managed by the system administrators. The Radio Callsigns API is designed to make accessing the database easier for developers, wanting to integrate the PI Codes Database into their own systems. Two use cases have been addressed:
- Developers constructing RadioDNS SI files but requiring frequency and PI Code information for Call Signs
- RDS Encoder manufacturers wanting to offer the correct PI Code for a given Call Sign in their own device configuration software
