CBS flagship WCBS-TV New York has been maximizing the use of drones in news-gathering since launching its fleet of five of them in September 2016. The drones, branded “Drone Force 2,” allow the station’s news operation to capture low-altitude footage, providing views and details that can’t be shot from the station’s choppers. The drones are operated by the station’s five FAA-107 licensed drone pilots. Using drones in newsgathering allows TV to shoot low-altitude aerial footage, providing viewers with a unique perspective. Expansive visuals provide viewers with deeper perspective and understanding of news events.
