CBS flagship WCBS-TV New York has been maximizing the use of drones in newsgathering since launching its fleet of five of them in September 2016. The drones, branded “Drone Force 2,” allow the station’s news operation to capture low-altitude footage, providing views and details that can’t be shot from the station’s choppers. The drones are operated by the station’s five FAA-107 licensed drone pilots. Using drones in newsgathering allows TV to shoot low-altitude aerial footage, providing viewers with a unique perspective. Expansive visuals provide viewers with deeper perspective and understanding of news events.
